Hundreds of thousands of people in Britain know that our current system is rotten. The level of public support for the occupation of St Paul’s in the heart of the city of London is an expression of this. Between us we have experience and ideas of how things can be done better, which show how all of the points in the People’s Charter are possible and more.
Some ideas are already developed. An international Tobin Tax on financial deals is a proposal gaining ground across Europe. The PCS civil service union has shown how investment in public services would benefit the economy and all of us. The Green Party has shown the £billions we would save if we stopped tax loopholes used by major corporations. And the Charter for Women is an example of the policies and actions required to build in equalities at the heart of all ideas for progressive change.
People across the world are discussing practical ways that global financial institutions and corporations can be properly regulated and controlled.
And we will need many more ideas.
For years we have had successive Governments screwing up our economy and our futures, telling us that there is no alternative. This was never true, and now their policies have resulted in a crisis they don’t know how to get out of. With the cracks in Government deepening it is time for us to really get the debate going about what is really possible.
