Commenting following the publication of Frank Field’s report The Foundation Years: preventing poor children becoming poor adults, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union, said:
“Ending child poverty should be a key priority of the Coalition Government, but despite pious words, there is a fundamental lack of commitment in this area.
“Unfortunately, the Coalition Government won’t end child poverty by making cuts to education and other public services which will hit the poorest hardest.
“Warm words provide no comfort to socially disadvantaged children whose teachers and family support workers are now being handed redundancy notices as a result of the Coalition Government’s plans.
“It is a major indictment on the Department for Education that this research has confirmed the socially divisive nature of its schools policy and the potential to widen inequality.
“The Coalition Government’s decision to abandon important provisions in the Equality Act will mask the socioeconomic impact of their damaging programme of cuts and reforms rather than put the spotlight on ending child poverty.”
