Commenting on reports of the increased amount of funds being allocated by the Department for Education to the Coalition Government’s free schools programme, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union, said:
“It is scandalous that the Secretary of State for Education refuses to come clean on the amount of public money being spent on free schools.
“Once again it is clear that this Coalition cannot be trusted.
“First we are told that free school proposers will have to find their own capital to set up a school.
“Then we are told that £50 million has been set on one side to support development.
“Now we learn that the amount being spent is ‘undisclosed’ and subject to individual negotiation.
“What is clear is that local authorities are being stripped of much needed funds for services, run down schools are being denied the funds for essential refurbishment and taxpayers are being treated with contempt.”
