Commenting on the Secretary of State for Education’s comments regarding schools funding to the Education Select Committee, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union, said:

“At every turn it becomes clear that the Coalition Government has attempted to mislead the public on the scale of the cuts facing education.

“In October, when the Chancellor announced the Comprehensive Spending Review he said that education had been 'protected'.

"Only four weeks ago the Secretary of State for Education told the House of Commons that there would be a real terms increase in funding for schools.

"Today the Secretary of State admits that schools will be facing real terms cuts in spending and that it will be ' a difficult situation’.

“No amount of handwringing by the Secretary of State will mask the fact that Coalition Government either knew the truth all along or it got its sums wrong.

“At a time when schools and local authorities are facing massive cuts, when thousands of jobs and essential services are at risk and when some of the most disadvantaged young people are having their financial lifeline cut, it is simply indefensible for the Secretary of State to continue to fritter scarce resources on pursuing unnecessary and expensive experiments, such as free schools and bribing schools to become academies.”
